To many people the village of Bacton conjures up the sight of the
massive gas terminal on the outskirts of the village. Leaving this modern day
monastery behind we enter a typical Norfolk village steeped in history. The
Bacton sign also includes the nearby villages of Bromholme and Keswick and
standing on a small strip of grass by the roadside. On the sign you see a monk
standing in an archway of Bromholme Priory. This priory dates back to 1113. In
the 12 century a priest at Bromholme acquired a cross that he claimed to be
made from parts of True Cross. Many miracles have been claimed by this cross,
people raised from the dead and sight restored to the blind. Nothing much
remains of the priory today accept the arch shown on the sign which is only a
short distance from where the sign stands. Keswick the other village is now
mainly an area of holiday caravans.
