St. Peter & St. Paul

Shernbourne Church
Bell Tower

The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul is just visible behind the row of Irish Yews to the left. A peep behind the yews gives you a glimpse of this church with its neat little bell tower seen to better advantage to the left. A visit to this church is well rewarded if only to see one of the finest Norman Fonts in the County. The square bowl standing on four stout legs is decorated with intricate carvings, with grotesque animal heads at the base. A brass dated 1458 of Sir Thomas de Shernborne with his wife Johanna alongside him is on the north wall in the chancel. Part of the church dates back to the 13th century but most was restored in 1898 by Edward V11 then Prince of Wales.
