Bessingham church stands on high ground at the top of the
village. This pretty round tower church dates back to Saxon times, probably the
11th century. The church was allowed to fall into poor condition, then in the
19th century it underwent a big restoration both inside and out. The plain
looking font survives from the 14th century and close by are two 15th century
poppyhead bench ends. The tower has two bells one dates back to 1450 the other
1699. To the left you can see the eagle lectern and the pulpit. |
